Something's Fishy!

Last week we were entertained by a Marine Biologist that talked about the ocean and the sea animals that live in it. We had a chance to touch them! We looked at fossils and pictures of animals we knew and some that we had never seen before. It was so much fun!

This week in Math

As we work diligently in Math we are learning all about ten frames, quantities and writing numbers to 5. Can we compare and determine which group is greater than, less than or equal to each other? Can we represent numbers in different ways? We talk about models and what they can look like in math. More importantly we are learning to become better counters and always willing to double check our work.

Seventeen Days In!

The weather has made it seem a lot longer than 17 days! It feels like summer and the room has been very warm! Indian summer for sure. We have begun to talk about the fall and are starting to decorate our classroom with reds, oranges, greens and yellows. We sponge painted some pumpkins for a bulletin board and will watercolor some leaves next week.

In literacy we have been working on the letters m, n, f, b and t. We need to know what sounds each make and if we can hear the sounds at the beginning of words. We have been sorting, listening and writing letters. We also met at a guided reading table and practiced pointing to words as we read a story about color words. It can be difficult to see those finger spaces between words and where sentences end. When we finish our color word books have your child read his/her story book to you making sure that he/she is pointing accurately to the words being read. This is one of the beginning strategies to reading.

In Math we are comparing groups of objects and determining if they are greater than, less than or equal in number. The hardest part is explaining our answers while using these math words. We continue to play a lot of games (team work) as well as practicing number formations to 5.

Building on Phonemic Awareness Skills

We are working on hearing those ending sounds in words that rhyme. Takes a lot of practice! But we keep reading rhyming books and playing games to help us.

A Great Beginning

These past six days in school we have been working on establishing routines. Not to mention trying to get to know everyone and their names! We have a great class and we are quickly becoming acclimated to our school surroundings. We have begun our Fundations literacy program and Envisions Math program. We are off to a wonderful start and have begun filling our marble jar for good behavior! We are going to reach for those stars!!

Southwick....so much fun!

A big thank you to the moms and dads who helped out on our trip to the zoo. We could not do this without you. It is a busy place there and the extra hands help us to keep everyone safe. As always it is so much fun and a trip the children look forward to each year! Below are some pics!

Pezzettino - Italian for Little One

This week we read the story Pezzettino written by Leo Lionni. In the story Pezzettino lives in a world where everything is big, daring and so wonderful. He is so small and wants to be a part of something big. He thinks that he must belong to someone else. This is his adventure to find out. After reading we decided to draw our own picture of someone Pezzettino could belong to.

Class Update

Now that the spring is here (I think?) we have been writing lots of words and sentences and listening to words that have long and short vowels. We have become some great writers and illustrators as well. Our handwriting has improved and our work looks amazing. We have begun a new topic of opinion/persuasive writing.....difficult to do but we continue to march on and put our best effort into what we do.

In Math, we have been working on decomposing teen numbers. Through games and practice we have been writing equations and using place value rods to represent what these numbers mean.
